Diocese of San Bernardino · Office of Vocations
Home · Called by Name weekends · Nov 7–8 & 14–15, 2026 Called by Name · Llamados por su Nombre

Every vocation begins with a name.

Is God calling you?your son?your granddaughter?your friend?someone in your pew?

At the close of National Vocation Awareness Week, every parish in our diocese is inviting names for the priesthood and religious life. Share your own, or share one or more names of people you know. We reach out personally, with no pressure.

¿Dios te llama a ti, o a alguien que conoces? Comparte uno o más nombres. Nos comunicaremos personalmente, sin presión.

How it works

Share names. We make the call.

01 / PRAY

Who comes to mind?

A son, a grandson, a friend, a young woman in youth group, or you. Name as many as God puts on your heart.

02 / SHARE

Scan or fill out a card.

At Mass, scan the QR code or fill out a pew card and place it in the basket. Or use the form below, anytime.

03 / WE CALL

A personal invitation.

Within a week, someone from the Office of Vocations calls, in English or Spanish. One call, one letter, one invitation. Then the choice is theirs.

“I have called you
by name: you are mine.”

Isaiah 43:1

  • Your own name, if you are discerning
  • Anyone you see with a heart for God and for others
  • Ages 14 and up. For anyone under 18, we contact a parent first
  • Only the Office of Vocations and the person’s pastor see the names

About one minute per name. Have more than one? Submit the form once for each person. Prefer paper? Pick up a card at your parish on Nov 7–8 or Nov 14–15.

We want to hear from you

What is your parish doing this week? A holy hour, a vocation homily, a classroom visit, a sister at youth night: send a photo and a few lines to vocations@sbdiocese.org or tag @sbvoc. We’ll share the good work across the diocese.

Questions

Good to know.

Will they know I shared their name?

Only if you check “It’s okay to tell them I recommended them.” Otherwise we simply say their name came up during Called by Name.

Is there any pressure?

No. One call, one letter from Bishop Rojas, and one invitation to a next step, like Discernment Thursdays at Serra House. After that, the choice is theirs.

Can I share more than one name, or my own?

Yes to both. Submit the form once for each person, or use the extra lines on the pew card. If you are discerning, choose “Myself.”

What about someone under 18?

Share their name. We always contact a parent or guardian first.

What if they’re called to the diaconate or marriage?

For the permanent diaconate, we connect them with the diocesan Office for Deacons. For everyone else, we send a warm thank-you and ask them to pray for vocations.

Lord, you call each of us by name. Give us eyes to see the gifts you have placed in others, and the courage to say, “Have you ever thought God might be calling you?” Amen.
