No Algorithm for a Miracle: What AI Can't Produce at Galilee 2026

By Fr. Hau, Director of Vocations, Diocese of San Bernardino “Peace! Be still!” — Mark 4:39 Everybody is talking about Artificial Intelligence these days. Is it going to save the world? Is it going to take over the world? Depends on who you ask. AI can write you a song, paint you a picture, and plan your whole week. What it cannot do is forgive your sins, calm the storm in your heart, or fill a seminary lawn with more than five hundred young adults on a Saturday night. So while the whole...

The Ball is Rolling: An Update on the Life of Our Seminarians

Serra House of Formation — First Few Weeks of the New Formation Year Formation season is officially in full swing, and if you've walked past Serra House lately, you might have noticed a certain buzz in the air, LITERALLY, in some cases, but more on that later. This Saturday, nine new seminarians will receive their Commitment, formally entering and being recognized by our Bishop as full members of the Serra House community. Please keep them close in your prayers as they take this beautiful...

God Knows What He’s Doing: A Seminarians Convocation of Faith, Fraternity, and Joy

From July 26–30, 2026, our seminarians gathered for the third annual Seminarian Convocation, held this year at the Divine Word Retreat Center in Riverside. It's one of the few retreat houses spacious enough to hold all of our men under one roof, and for many of them, that meant a new and humbling experience: sleeping in a room with fifteen beds, surrounded by the very unglamorous, very human symphony of each other's snoring. It sounds like a small thing. But it was, in its own way, a lesson...

SBVOC - Quo Vadis

By Fr. Hau Vu There is an old story from the early Church of Peter, fleeing Rome to escape Nero's persecution, meeting a stranger walking the other way down the Appian Road. It is Christ. Startled, Peter asks him the question that would name a road, a legend, and now a retreat: Quo vadis, Domine? Lord, where are you going? Christ answers that he is going to Rome, to be crucified again. Ashamed, Peter turns around and walks back into the very city he was running from, and eventually into his...

More Than a Game

By Fr. Hau Vu, Vocations Director The world has been captivated by soccer. Every four years, the World Cup has a way of bringing people together. Families gather around televisions, strangers become friends for ninety minutes, and entire nations unite behind one team. There is something beautiful about the game. But I would argue that there is something even more beautiful than the World Cup. It is a soccer match between priests and seminarians. That may sound like an exaggeration until you...

Under the Stars: Gala For Married Couples

On May 2, 2026, we hosted our first-ever Gala for Married Couples, "Under the Stars," right here in the courtyard of Serra House of Formation. It was one of those Southern California evenings you can't manufacture: skies clear, birds chirping, a warm breeze blowing through the palms and across Blue Mountain. One can say the Holy Spirit was surrounding the evening with His love. But what inspired us to put this on? Well, it started simply. A parishioner saw the need married couples longing...

Brooms, Towels, the Tools of the Soul

Reflection on Spring Cleaning and the Interior Life of the Seminarian's There is a moment near the end of every semester at Serra House of Formation that doesn't make it onto the academic calendar, no syllabus prepares the men for it, no rubric grades it, and yet in many ways it may be the most formative exercise of the year. On April 23, 2026, our seminarians set aside their notes and their textbooks and picked up something altogether different: brooms, cleaning solutions, microfiber towels,...

All Aboard! The 4th Annual Bishop Tea Time

A nautical afternoon of tea, laughter, and love for our seminarians The nautical spirit was alive and well. Look at these beautiful ladies dressed for the voyage! Friends, let me tell you something. When I walked into the Diocesan Pastoral Center on April 11th, I had to stop and catch my breath. Blue, silver, and white balloons surrounded the place like ocean water and bubbles rising from the sea. The tables were set in what felt like a sandy seaside escape. The helpers were all dressed in...

Planting Seeds, Growing Shepherds

How over 750 Vietnamese people showed up, from Florida to New York, to support the future priests of our Diocese . Fr. Hau Vu | Vocations Director Something amazing happened on the evening of April 10, 2026. The Diocese of San Bernardino Vocations Office held its very first Diocesan Vietnamese Fundraiser for vocations. We called it "Planting Seeds, Growing Shepherds," and let me just tell you, it was a night I will never forget. Over 750 people came out. And not just from around our...
